A Red Lipstick Kind of Life

With a Cock A Doodle Doo here and a Cock A Doodle Doo there…

This Chicken Adventure has been a learning process.  Apparently, it is very difficult to determine the sex of a chicken when they are chicks, sometimes you just don’t know what you have until they are big. I mean, I don’t know that for sure, I haven’t done any research, but from what I hear, it is like brain surgery, for real!

SO, here is what happened…  You may remember that we got 4 chickens (shown below).  Spike, Egg Dropping, Paisley and Ariel.

From bottom left to right, Egg Dropping, Spike, Ariel and Paisley

One morning, we woke up to Spike ‘Cock A Doodle Doo’ing’, the next morning Paisley was at it too!  Now remember, these are city chickens, no Roosters allowed BECAUSE of the Cock A Doodle Doo!  So, we made the trip out to Yoder to visit our chicken lady and exchange my two beautiful roosters for a couple more hens!  Spike and Paisley were glad to be back, Paisley ‘Cock A Doodle Doo’d’ as soon as I took her, I mean him, out of the box!

SO, in comes, Jenny Brown (Triston’s new chicken to replace Spike) and Petri (my new chicken to replace Paisley).

This is Jenny Brown, isn't she gorgeous?!
This is Petri, my new chicken. She is so pretty! Do you remember Petri from the movie 'Land Before Time'? That is who she is named after : )

So, we bring Jenny Brown and Petri home, and they meet Ariel and Egg Dropping.  This part was a little tricky because they have to all establish pecking order, and they were kind of mean to each other!  So, after the pecking at each other and making sure who’s boss, we are set.

The next morning at 5 something I hear a “Cock A Doodle Doo”, I jump out of bed, open the chicken coop in just enough time to see Ariel crow again!  She, I mean he was out of his mind!  Ariel was crowing like no Rooster could crow, with volume and confidence that I didn’t know a chicken could have.  Now that Paisley and Spike were gone, Ariel was the KING of the Parkey Backyard, and he was going to let everyone know!  Ariel had to go, and Ariel had to go right now!

SO, we made our trip out to Yoder (45 minute drive from Colorado Springs), to see Kathy, our chicken lady and trade Ariel for a new chicken!  So, Reese picked out Rose.

This is Rose, Reese also calls her Rosey.

We were pleased, 4 hens finally…uh oh, nevermind!  Yep, you guessed it, a couple days later, what do I hear???? “Cock A Doodle Doo” again.  This time it’s Jenny Brown!!  Luckily she, I MEAN HE, wasn’t too vocal at first, so we kept him for a few days, but we couldn’t deny the inevitable, SO out to Yoder we went again!  And now we have Suzy Fresh to replace Spike, Triston’s 1st chicken and Jenny Brown, Triston’s 2nd chicken….

Suzy Fresh.

So, there you have it.  I am hoping and praying this is our final line up…

From left to right: Egg Dropping (the only original one left), Suzy Fresh, Rose, and Petri.

But, I’m not betting on it : )  And maybe by the turn of the century, I will actually get some eggs!

If you ever need help picking out a Rooster, let me know, apparently I’m REALLY good at it!

  1. Quick update on the chickens….Turns out that Egg Dropping was also a Rooster! I gave him to a nice gentleman in Calhan, then I got a new hen named Precious. Once I got Precious home, within a few days, Rose was ‘cock a doodle doing’! I gave Rose to a nice family in black forest and decided to stick with the final 3 hens: Petri, Suzy Fresh, and Precious. So, we finally have eggs (usually 3 eggs a day)!
